Why does God sometimes allow us to fail in living up to our own ideals?

Why is the chisel and hammer so useful for understanding the spiritual life?

The block of marble cannot tell what it is being made into by the artist. It knows the feeling of each blow of the hammer. It feels, if it could speak, that something is being taken away. And yet, God is at work making something beautiful.

What do we especially need to follow in the spiritual life?

The inspirations of the Holy Spirit. We need to learn about how he attracts us to various actions. We need to learn how to be faithful to his motions. The Holy Spirit is sanctifying us and others through us.
