St Philip Neri in the 16th century would gather those each day who were desirous of seeking Christian perfection. He would read from a spiritual book and then discourse on the meaning of what was read. This podcast (and the nightly prayer group from which it springs) seeks to carry on St Philip’s method of helping people become holy, even saints, in their own homes.

St Teresa gives several examples from the world of business to help her friends see what failing to resign oneself to God's will looks like. She wants us to pray for the grace of healing, healing for our wounded souls. So often we want things just according to our taste. We so often fail to surrender to God's plans. We can even get discouraged at the lack of progress we have made. In all these matters, she wants us to practice humility, surrendering ourselves to God.

Jesus said: "I am gentle and humble in heart." St Paul says: "He humbled himself, taking on the form of a servant." Our Lord tells us to take his yoke upon ourselves and to learn from him.
Humility undermines pride, the great enemy of the spiritual life. In the third mansions, because of our successes and progress, we can become blind to our own limitations and imperfections. We can secretly think that our well regulated life is our own doing. Let us pray not to get ourselves stuck in this stage. God sends us tests and troubles and withdraws certain little graces to help us grow in self-knowledge and humility.

St Teresa specifies that the mansions have many rooms. She gives very concrete advice on how to avoid the tricks of the devil in the rooms of this first mansion. She especially explains how the devil loves to cause a cooling of charity in communities by having people focus on things that are not really their concern, especially the perceived faults of others. Powerful warning about the value of charity for a life of prayer. Very important for understanding the rest of the book.

How does mortal sin relate to the image of the soul as a crystal? If God is at the centre of the soul, grace is the light that fills the soul. Mortal sin is like the soul being covered with a black cloth. Such sin causes the radiation of God's life (grace) to cease. Wonderful image of grace, the radiation of God's love in our souls that makes us bright and beautiful.

How do we enter the interior castle? The interior castle is the soul itself. We have to enter into ourselves. We are seeking the One who dwells at the centre of the soul. We seek Our Lord in our souls by prayer, by paying attention to the One inside ourselves and his activities.
But how did St Teresa gain this insight to see the soul as a crystal mansion with many mansions? God gave her this gift as a charismatic grace. May God show himself to us. May he show us our capacity for a living relationship with God.

Did St Teresa want to write this book on prayer? No. She felt great repugnance both by a sense of her lack of ability and her constant headaches. But she trusted in God to help her. If she was being commanded by the Church to write this book, she would trust God to teach her what to say. She began on the Solemnity of the Holy Trinity.
This book is written after St Teresa had vast experience of prayer. It is her masterpiece. A woman writing primarily for other women. She prays that her work will be of profit to others. Above all, she hopes that her effort will lead to Christ being loved and praised by even just one other person.
